CAREER OF MR J. T. PAUL

Diamond Wedding Celebration

A legislative councillor during the terms of three different party Governrpehts of New Zealand, Mr J. Tz Paul, of Karori, and his wife will celebrate their diamond wedding on Sunday. Before Mr Paul became interested in politics he was a well-known journalist. He was born in Victoria in 1874 and came to New Zealand in 1899, joining the staff of the “Otago Daily Times’’ as a linotype operator. He was associated with the/ newspaper in various capacities until 1939. In 1904, Mr Paul moved the resolution to form an independent Labour Party and was the party president for three years. In 1907 he was appointed to the Legislative Council at the age of 33—the youngest man ever to sit in the “council.

After World War 11, during which Mr Paul was Director of Publicity and Press Censorship, he was reappointed to the Legislative Council and retired when the council was abolished in 1950.

Mr Paul’s activities today are centred on gardening and reading. He is at present putting the finishing touches to a book—“ Growing Pains,’’ a history of the trade union movement in New Zealand.
