DUMPING OF BUTTER

Subsidised Sale To Britain

(N.Z Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 9 p.m.) ROME, Nov. 2. An argument over the supply of butter to Biitain loomed today before the opening of the threeweek general conference of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation, according to the American Associated Press. The leader of the New Zealand delegation, Mr R. B. Tennent, said the reported dumping of Govern-ment-subsidised butter on the British market was almost certain to be discussed during the conference.

Ireland, Holland, Sweden and Finland have been mentioned as countries whose big butter sales to Britain might be objected to as dumping, the American Associated Press reported. Mr Tennent declared that a more careful examination of the butter subsidy and marketing systems in such countries would have to precede any formal complaint. Discussion of the matter during the conference might help to clarify the question, he said.

Trie American Associated Press quoted Mr Tennent as saying that 40,000 tons of butter sold at below cost prices (with government subsidies making up the loss) were being dumped on the British market annually. Reports from other delegations indicate that if New Zealand protests against the dumping she will be supported by Australia and Denmark.
