Glacier To Scout Ice Pack

The United States Navy icebreaker Glacier is about 750 miles from McMurdo Sound 'and has not sighted any ice. whereas in the same latitudes last year the icebreaker had already run into solid ice. .

Northerly winds which have accompanied the ship since it left Christmas Island have driven the loose pack back towards Antarctica. according to a report received in Christchurch. The ship will scout the pack to determine the feasibility of escorting the cargo ship Greenville Victory to Little America late this month, and will then leave for New Zealand before returning to Antarctica to assist in the resupply of I.G.Y. bases. She is due to arrive at Lyttelton next Sunday and will leave again about November 20 with the Greenville Victory. The icebreaker Atka will .arrive at Lyttelton on November 20.
