VIOLENCE IN CYPRUS
Threat Seen Of Renewal
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) NICOSIA, November 1.
The Cyprus Government said tonight that recent incidents in Cyprus had made it clear that there existed a threat of renewed violence. i The statement was made in a letter sent by the colony’s actingAdmini strati ve Secretary to Mr J. H. Oldenbroek, General Secretary of the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions. It was in reply to Mr Oldenbroek’s recent letter io the Governor, Sir John Harding, asking that the emergency regulations affecting the trade union movement be rescinded.
“The Governor’s objective has always been to achieve a balance between the unfortunate necessity for the retention of security measures and his sincere desire to abandon powers reluctantly taken and sparingly used,” said the reply. It was, however, regrettable that recent incidents had shown that life in Cyprus continued to be dominated by the threat of a renewed outbreak of terrorism and by the intimidation of the population by the terrorist organisation, latterly supplemented by physical assaults and murder.
While these conditions existed, the Government had no alternative but to retain certain emergency powers.
