State Subsidies Of £1,424,959

“How much the State is willing and able to do, it can never do as much as it can in cooperation with aged people’s councils. It is a very fruitful' partnership.” said the Minister of j Health (Mr J. R. Hanan) at the; official opening of Langford House, a home for aged persons, on Saturday afternoon.

“The Aged People’s Welfare Council at Langford House has] been providing for up to 29 old; persons, and the extensions will add another 20 beds, he said. “The Government had made available subsidies totalling £1.424,959 to assist religious and voluntary welfare organisations in providing 1506 beds for old persons in homes, hospitals, or Hats and cottages.” said Mr Hanan. “Since the Government's policy of assistance for old persons’ flats and cottages was initiated in October. 1950, local bodies have been granted subsidies of up to £399.634 towards the cost of accommodation for 966 old persons. "Applications for sub. idles for' the next few years before the Government will cost another] £1.000.000 and will provide 10.000; beds.” he said. “In our desire to keep our old senior citizens’ independence, we! have introduced the meals on| wheels and the laundrv service,”! he said. "The Red Cross handles] the meals and the Nurse Maude! association the laundry service.” The extensions to' Langford House cost £13.598. and a subsidy of £11.629 had been granted to the Aged People's Welfare Council by the Government.
