IMPRESSIVE SHEEP SHOW AT AMBERLEY DOMAIN

The Amberley Show held in the Amberley Domain on Saturday fully lived up to its reputation of being one of the best country sheep shows in New Zealand.

This year its lamb classes attracted almost 500 rapidly developing early lambs, and the veteran

lamb buyer, Mr D. Mackay, who has been going to the Amberley Show for the last 34 years, has never

seen the lambs looking so well. Asked why this should

be so, Mr Mackay replied: “It is the good farming.”

Mr Mackay singled out a pen of three Down cross lambs in the class for lambs not to exceed 821 b liveweight from E. J. Whyte (Waipara) for the championship honours. These lambs, he said, had good conformation, good hindquarters. and would hang up well, though they might be a little fat for the London market. Panned alongside the lambs were the flock sheep, which with their lambs exceeded 20(1 in number—a cross-section of the district’s sheep population. “I do not think you would see a better array of flock sheep anywhere in

the country.” said the judge, Mr H. M. Copland (Dromore). "There < are plenty of them and they are very good.” The very heavy } dense fleeces carried by some of the hoggets were an aspect of i the display that particularly z caught the judge s eye. J Judges in the breed sections ‘ also found much to please thei] eye, though entries were not 1 always as large as they might £ have wished. "He has one of the j best heads I have seen on a { Merino ram for years,” said the 1 Merino judge, Mr T. Fraser, of * Hanmer, as he looked admiringly r over the handsome champion < from the estate of James Stev- i enson. “It says quite a lot for * a studmaster to bring him out ; in that condition,” he commented, { after drawing attention to the i animal's heavy fleece of medium- ‘ quality wool. Open in Face s The ewe champion, also a Stev- i enson sheep, was a very fine type* < of Merino ewe, he said. Be- ' cause she was open in the face { her progeny could be turned out j anywhere on the hills and they < would be able to see where they 5 were going. And on top of that she had a fleece of fine good length wool.

In a somewhat larger halfbred section, Mr Fraser said that all the sheep had been done exceptionally well, apart from some of the natural condition entries which were showing the signs of the weather. Without exception on all of them the wool was very well grown. The judge praised the champion ewe and ram sent forward by C. Burrows. The ewe, he said, had an excellent head, was well covered with an even fleece of medium quality halfbred wool, had a good barrel and should be able to lamb well. The ram was an excellent sheep, straight along the back, well covered with an even heavy fleece, but not carrying too much on the face. H. C. A. Sidey, of Glenovis, Hawarden, took the main honours in the Corriedale section, which the judge, Mr Douglas Johnston (Mayfield) described as a good representative showing of ■ the breed. The champion ram, a two tooth, was a good type of ram with a ram’s fleece quite characteristic of the breed, said the judge, and the aged ewe, which took top honours, had “a very nice fleece and a good carcase.” Strong Support The Southdowns were one of the best supported breeds in point of numbers and quality was so even in both the ram and ewe sections that the judges had to give every sheep very close attention. Accordingly Mr W. E. Moorhead, of Southbridge, who judged the rams and some of the ewes as well, was the last judge to finish his task. He selected all the champions and almost without exception, he said, they would hold their own in any show Apart from the ram champion, which was from A. D. Wyllie. all of the ether championship and reserve son CingS WCre 13,5611 by J - H. Pater-

Mr B. B. Slack, of Maheno. who judged some of the ewe classes, said that all of the entries showed good, careful breeding, and quite a number of the sheep could be expected to

, Mr F. P. Cookson <Ashburton) said there was "a good average exhibition,” with one or two nice hoggets in the natural condition classes showing up. Small entries came before Mr A. Amos (Ashburton) in the Suffolk and South Suffolk classes, but in both breeds quality was there. Though Amberley is essentially a sheep district there was a brave representation of Jersey cattle in the erand parade and the cattle judge, Mr A. H. Sherrard, of Waikato, expressed pleasure at the strong support in almost every section of the show—in numbers he said that they were in fact far superior to most North Island shows. All of the in-milk cows, he said, were full of dairy ability. The champion Jersey cow. exhibUed by F. W. Hansen, was described as a well-balanced cow carrying a first-class vessel, and the judge cha mpion bull, from !•’ "(yth. was “brimful of masculinity.”

As a climax to a full programme of ring events E. Upritchard’s Land Hover took the top hunter honours impressing the judge. Mr J. I. Paryound<OamarU) with ° ne faullless

Gate Takings Up Though there was a drop of moisTure in the atmosphere nearly all cay. the weather remained fine for the association to take , a \ the gate « compared with X?O5 last year.

Since the last show the association has further extended accommodation for sheep, which this year were slightly down in numbers of entries, but were up in total number of head taking into account entries of more than single sheep. The art. needlework, preserves and cooking exhibits shed has been renovated and boarding provided so that some exhibits can now be pinned up and shown to better advantage. The association, in co-operation with some other local organisations, now has in view’ the erection of a fine new- pavilion in a central position on the grounds.
