WATCH ON THE NOTORNIS

Long Vigil But No Eggs

(New Zealand Press Association) INVERCARGILL, Nov. 3.

Officers of the Department of Internal Affairs wildlife division have given up their cold vigil in the Murchison Mountains waiting for the notornis to lay eggs. After three weeks they have decided to climb down from Notornis Valley 3000 feet above Lake Te Anau and let the notornis lay in their own good time. The officers intend to return in a week or so to see what progress has been made'. According to reports the shy notornis have not started to make their nest yet. The wildlife division decided some months ago to take four notornis eggs and hatch them in an attempt to raise New Zealand’s rarest bird in captivity. But the notornis were not in laying mood, and the officers who had planned a stay of three or four days watched a week pass by with no cackles from the snowgrass. ' • This week there have been in Fiordland and the wind has been bitterly cold. Bleak at any time the valley is a particularly desolate spot at present. There is snow right down to the edge of Lake Notornis near , which the party was camped.
