THEATRE TAKINGS STOLEN

Safebreaker’s Haul At Wellington

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, October 29. The entire week-end takings of the independently-owned Ascot theatre in Newtown, Wellington, were stolen from a safe in the theatre ticket box sometime after the conclusion of a screening last evening. Neither the police nor the theatre management were tonight willing to reveal the amount of money taken from the safe. But it is believed to have been a considerable sum, for the theatre had shown films three times on Saturday, twice on Sunday and Monday, and once on Friday. The safe was found rifled this morning when the manager went to collect the money for banking. Detectives were busy in the theatre this afternoon. Because no doors had been forced, it is possible the safebreaker hid in the theatre after attending films on Monday evening.
