FOUNDATION GARMENTS

Opinion Of U.S. Expert

New Zealand women were fashion and style conscious and judging by the sales of foundation garments they were also figure conscious, said the export director of a large United States foundation garment manufacturing company (Mr Tom F. Carey) in Christchurch yesterday. Mr and Mrs Carey, who live ; at Bridgeport, Connecticut, are on a three weeks and a half tour of New Zealand.

“The design and manufacture of foundation garments is closely tuned to the fashion trends and at present there is a marked tendency lor light-weight elastic models,” said Mr Carey. “Just before 1 left New York I saw the sack look and it is definitely not as shapeless as 1 had been led to believe. It has a definite waist, bust and hip line, and for a woman to wear it successfully she needs a good figure, and hence the importance of a good foundation garment if it is to be worn properly,” he said.

“In spite of the H-look, the Aline and the sack look, there is still a great demand for foundation garments, indicating that women basically want to look like women,” Mr Carey said. Fine Stores He had seen some very fine stores in New Zealand which were comparable to stores in simi-lar-sized cities anywhere in the world, said Mr Carey. Merchandising practices in the United States were experiencing the same difficulties as they were in New lncreasing costs were cutting down profits and making the need greater for the promotion of goods. However, he thought that in the long run that was a good thing. The standard of display, the layout of stores and window dressing in this country were very good. “New Zealand is a very beautiful country, and I am looking forward to seeing some of these fish I have heard so much about. I hope to get in a day’s fishing at Lake Wanaka after visiting Invercargill,” said Mr Carey. Mr and Mrs Carey have three children, two girls aged 16 and 9 and a boy aged 15. They are on their first visit to New Zealand. They were in England for a number of years when Mr Carey was running the English firm and before that they lived in Switzerland
