£16,000 DAMAGES CLAIMED
Injured By Exploding Gelignite

A man who was injured by an explosion of gelignite while he was working for the Ministry of Works on the Wanganui-Rae-tihi highway is claiming £16.000 general damages in a case which opened be.ore Mr Justice McCarthy and a jury in the Supreme I Court at Wanganui ioday. Tie pl intiff is Paengaroa Te Kura, aged 41, married, with five children, and the defendant is the Attorney General. Mr J C O’Regan, of Wellington, is appearing for the plaintiff, and Mr N R. Bain is representing the Crown. Mr O'Regan said that at the time of the accident in 1954 the plaintiff was carrying a prime] when the fuse came out. When he pushed it back the gelignite exploded. The plaintiff lost one eye and was partly blinded in the other, lost one arm. was disfigured for life, and became almost deaf.
