GLOBEMASTER RETURNS
One of the two Globemasters that left for McMurdo Sound yesterday returned to Christchurch Airport after developing an oil leak about two hours and a half flying time from Christchurch. The aircraft touched down at Christchurch Airport at 2.15 p.m. Repairs have been completed and the aircraft is expected to leave at 9 a.m. today.
Another Globemaster, piloted by Captain V. J. De Cesare, who has made two landings in the last two weeks with two of his aircraft’s four engines out, touched down at Christchurch Airport at 10.10 p.m. “It’s a strange feeling to land with four engines,’’ said Captain De Cesare. A 15.0001 b tractor is being prepared by the United States Air Force for transport to Antarctica. The tractor will be flown south shortly and will be dropped at the South Pole to be used on improvements to the runway. Five parachutes will be required to support the weight.
