NEW TRAFFIC LIGHTS
Colombo-Cashel Streets
The new vehicle-actuated traffic light system at the Colombo and Cashel streets intersection came into operation at 7.30 a.m. yesterday. The system is now the same as other traffic lights in the city, and should minimise traffic congestion at peak periods. The new system operates with Colombo street on an arterial phase, so that the lights are permanently open to traffic on Colombo street, and change to open Cashel street traffic only when actuated by a vehicle. After the vehicle has passed, the lights change back to Colombo street. Provision is made for pedestrians to pass across, with push buttons to actuate the lights. A new installation of lights at the intersections of Montreal street, Oxford terrace and Tuam street has been completed, except for the installation of the controller, which will change the lights. The mechanism is on order, and should arrive soon. The lights will be in operation as soon as the controller arrives and can be coupled into the system. These lights are also vehicleactuated.
A further set of lights is on order for the intersection of Colombo and Gloucester streets. These will include pedestrian lights at the north end of Cathedral square, which will be coordinated with the lights at the Gloucester street crossing. Another set has been ordered for the intersection of Victoria street, Papanui road and Bealey avenue. Both these systems should be in operation by April 1, 1958. The City Council has another set of traffic lights on order, which may be installed at the intersection of Linwood avenue with Aidwins road and Buckleys road.
