Mrs S. P. Smith presided at the second birthday party of the Sydenham branch of the League of Mothers, when the provincial president (Mrs D. G. McFadden) held a short admission service for two members. A birthday cake was cut by Mrs A. Tinson, who was Welcomed back after her illness. An impressive ceremony took place before the assembled pupils and teachers at the Kaiapoi School on United Nations Day.' when Mrs C. Moor on behalf of l the Pines Beach Country Women’s Institute handed to the headmaster, Mr Foxton, a United Nations flag which had been handworked by the members. Mr F. J. Armstrong, chairman of the Christchurch branch of the United Nations Association, spoke on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Mrs Moor, president of the Pines Beach Institute. explained that the flag had been made as a result of a request from the executive committee of the New Zealand Country Women’s Institute, who had been approached by the Associated Countrywomen of the World to further the interests of 1 the United Nations in New Zealand. :
Miss Dai Armstrong, a former member of the Canterbury Repertory Society, is now playing the leading role of Lady Bushley in a new play. ‘‘Home Affairs.” in Cape Town, with a professional company. Miss Armstrong, a daughter of Mr Mark Armstrong, of Christchurch, went to London to study dramatic art.' where she attended the Fay Compton Studio. She has appeared with wellknown bands and also broadcast from the European stations of Normandie and Luxembourg. She was a member of the Brian Brooke Company for some time and recently appeared as “Momma” in Leonard Schach’s production of “Spring Quartette” (with Anne Ziegler and Webster Booth.
