LEPRECHAUN’S NARROW WIN AT RANGIORA

Leprechaun showed that he had relainied the form which had given him success at his previous start at Orari last Saturday week, when he narrowly won the North Canterbury Handicap, principal event and first leg of the double, at the North Canterbury Racing Club’s spring meeting al Rangiora yesterday.

His winning margin of a head from the Takanini visitor. Great Scot, would probably have been greater if his rider. B. S. Finlayson, had not eased him near the end. Finlayson adopted the same tactics which had proved successful at Orari. He had Mrs J. W. Woodhouse's Treasure Hunt gelding in about fifth place to the straight and when allowed more rein soon after straightening up. Leprechaun gathered in the leaders to have the race in safe keeping at the furlong. Great Scot was not disgraced in defeat. He was not wel] placed early and he had to cover a lot of extra ground, three horses wide, to get up to a challenging position, and was then forced very wide on the home turn. Motueka and Water Boy deadheated for third, a length behind Great Scot. The brilliant Rise and Shine began a fresh campaign successfully in the second leg of the double, the Dr. T. A. Will Memorial Handicap. She gave her apprentice rider, R. B. Taggart, who is attached to C. G. Humphries’ Riecarton stable, his first winning ride. Taggart had Mr P. D. Hall’s Sun King mare in the trailing position behind Litmus until the three furlongs, where she strode into a comfortable lead which she maintained to the finish.

In a double pool of £18.141. Leprechaun carried 2127 10s tickets, and reinvestments on Rise and Shine were 911 5s units, of which 326 were held on-course. The double dividend was £65 16s 6d for £1

The meeting was held in fine weather and the track was fast. A large attendance invested £48.489 10s. including £4852 10s on the double, compared with £46.672 last year, an increase of £lBl7 10s. First Leg Running Nasib. which had straddled a stall before the start and was sent to the outer, and Fleur drifted to the rear at the start of the North Canterbury Handicap. Water Boy was hurried out • from the inside of Nasib, and at the end of a furlong and a half was a length clear of Motueka and Shoal, with Leprechaun, Smuggles. Column and Coin’s Edge next ahead of Sumner, Desert Cloud, and Great Scot, which was three out. Inspire and Nasib were next with three lengths to Fleur. Water Boy continued in the lead into the back, but at the halfmile Shoal and Great Scot had joined him. Motueka. Column and Leprechaun were in the next line ahead of Smuggles. Desert Cloud and Nasib. which was starting to drift. Great Scot came to the straight with a slight lead on Water Boy and Shoal, which were just ahead of Motueka and Leprechaun. With the advantage of the inside running. Water Boy again took over on straightening up. but at the furlong was under

pressure when Leprechaun raced past him. Leprechaun appeared in for an easy win when Great Scot challenged and failed by a head. Water Boy and Motueka deadheated for third a length back, just ahead of Column. which' shaded Smuggles for fifth. Shoal i was next and she was followed ini by Desert Cloud. Coin’s Edge and Fleur. Rise and Shine Wins | Rise and Shine trailed Litmus toi the three furlongs in the second! leg of the double, the Dr. T. A. I Will Memorial, sped clear into a three-lengths lead approaching the straight and was not extended! to win by two lengths from Cur-’ tain Raiser. Curtain Raiser had shared the early trail with Rise and Shine, but was eased into third place at the half-mile. He moved past the tiring Litmus on the turn and although he ran the last furlong strongly he could make no impression on the winner. He held second place just as easily. Assembly, third on the turn, battled on to hold that position two and a half lengths behind Curtain Raiser. Princess Neptune was a further two lengths back, just shading Tess, which came home strongly for fifth. Litmus was next, ahead of Copenhagen and Sun House, with Happy and County Fermanagh at the » rear. Happy was slowest away and Assembly also dwelt. Results:—
