Fishing Boat From Britain For N.Z.
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 8 p.m.) LONDON, Oct. 28. A small motor fishing vessel—the Solent Swan—will soon be leaving a quiet Thames backwater on a 12,000-mile voyage to New Zealand, according to the “News Chronicle" today. On board will be 36-year-old Major W. Ellery Anderson. a master mariner; Graham Gain, aged 34, a small boats expert; Maurice Fitzgerald, a New Zealand engineer; and Jim Dryer, an Australian carpenter.
Mr Gain said yesterday there was no romance about the 90-day trip. “It’s purely a business job." he said. “Small fishing craft bought here at a fair price can be sold at a much higher price in New Zealand if you can get them there.” A boat like the 47ft Solent Swan can be bought in England for about £2500 and would cost another £l5OO to deliver to New Zealand, where it might be sold for as much as £BOOO, the newspaper said.
