LAMB PRICES INCREASED
28d Per Lb For Under 28’s
(New Zealand Press Association) HASTINGS, October 22. Increases ranging between 2Jd and 3Jd per lb wil] be paid for the first of the season’s export lamb compared with last season’s opening schedule. The extent of the increase surprised some farmers when the schedule was released at the first day of the Royal Show on Tomoana Show Grounds. This year’s opening schedule abolishes, for a time at least, the weight ranges 43-501 b and over 501 b and incorporates the two in one range over 421 b.
Early Kill Reduced It appears to be designed to overcome last year’s problem, when a combination of a poor early-fattening season and a relatively disappointing schedule had the effect of drastically reducing the early kill.
Opening schedules for this year and last year are as follows: 1957 1956 d per lb d per lb Under 281 b 28 24$ 29-361 b .. 26 23 37-421 b .. 23$ 21 43-501 b .. 21$ 19 Over 501 b 21$ 17 Seconds, in each year, are priced Id per lb below firsts. (Opening schedule prices for lambs last season were the same in the South Island as in the North Island, and remained the same for the greater part of the season. .By May South Island operators were paying Id per lb above the North Island schedule.)
