P.A.Y.E.

Sir,—This financial child, as produced by the Minister of Finance, will be found in practice hard to rear. Its maturity contains so many clauses that it is cumbersome and incomprehensible. It is possible, politically, to gain control of the people and their private lives through control of finance. I pointed this out when the Labour Government assumed control of the Bank of New Zealand. The Minister, I understand, in one instance, proposes not to collect social security charge against one class of people until after death. This is cumulative addition to death duties, and is robbing the widow and the fatherless. The man who runs his own business sells goods. The man who works for wages sells labour., Why make a distinction between them I can see no point of gain in it.—Yours, etc., SAMUEL CRAIGHEAD. October 21, 1957.
