AUSTRALIA HELD TO DRAW

Bowlers Fail In Opening Match (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) KWITE, October 21. After Benaud, who took nine for 16, had routed Northern Rhodesia for 85 in the first innings today, the Australian attack slumped badly and was unable to press home the advantage after enforcing a follow on. The match ended in a tame draw. Trailing Australia’s first innings score of 302 for six wickets declared by 217 runs with 190 minutes to play. Northern Rhodesia lost only one wicket (to Benaud, who finished with 10 for 40) for 124 runs. The best that could be said of the Australians’ performance was that it was a good workout to start the tour, with Benaud carrying the bowling. Mekiff and Kline were disappointing.
