U.S. MEDICAL FELLOWSHIP
Award To City Doctor Dr. D. W. Beaven, senior medical registrar at the Christchurch Hospital since 1955, has been awarded an Eli Lilley and Company fellowship which will allow him to continue post-graduate study as an associate of medicine at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital, Boston, and as a research fellow of Harvard University. It is thought to be the first time the award has been made to a New Zealander. The fellowship, which is tenable for one year, is one of 10 awarded annually by the company, a large drug manufacturing firm, to qualified persons in different countries to enable them to study at recognised medical institutions in the United States.
The Peter Bent Brigham Hospital is one of the leading medical centres in the United States. While he is there, Dr. Beaven hopes to further his studies in clinical research on metabolism, endocrinology, and diabetes. Born in Christchurch, Dr. Beaven was educated at Christ’s College and Otago University, where he graduated M. 8., Ch.B. in 1949. He was a house surgeon at the Christchurch Hospital until 1952, when he went to Britain to carry out post-graduate study at a number of English hospitals. While he was overseas, he was admitted as a member by examination of the Royal Colleges of Physicians of London and Edinburgh. Dr. Beaven returned to Christchurch in 1955 and was appointed senior medical registrar at Christchurch Hospital. Last year he was admitted, by examination, as a member of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians. Dr. Beaven will leave for the United States in January.
