SHORT-SPAN BRIDGES

Two-Way Units On All Roads (New Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN, October 21. The National Roads Board has decided that all road bridges less than 50ft long, even those on back-country roads, would in future be two-way structures, the automobile association representative on the board. Mr P. W. Breen, told the No. 16 District Roads Council at its meeting in Dunedin today. The decision, made at a meeting a few days ago, was announced because of recent criticism of the tendency of the board to build one-way bridges on country roads, he said. The reason for two-way bridges being built over short spans was that vehicles usually approached them at speed and often had no time to give way to one another. For spans of more than 50ft. one-way structures would still be built if the road was not sufficiently important. Mr Breen said. These bridges were built, with provision for widening later.
