Ellesmere A. And P. Show Held In Perfect Weather

The attendance at the Ellesmere Agriculture l and Pastoral Association's show, held at Leeston or. Saturday in perfect weather, fell just short of the record established two years ago. The gate takings amounted to £439. compared with £338 last year. There were slightly fewer entries compared with last year. It was the first show of the season in the Sou'h Island. The grand parade ■was led by the Ellesmere Highland Pipe Band, and the Ellesmere Brass Band was also in attendance.

There was a disappointing number of entries in the Corriedale section, said the judge (Mr J. F. G. Blakely, of Waikari). Apparently some of the regular Corriedale exhibitors at Ellesmere planned to take their sheep north to the Royal Show to be held at Hawke's Bay this week. The champion ram exhibited by the estate of the late Sir R. Heaton Rhodes was a bold type of animal and a good specimen of the breed, said Mr Blakely. There was close competition in the class for three fine wool hoggets. unshorn, in the flock section, said the judge (Mr Donald Manson. of Christchurch). All three placings went to A. J. Withell. In the class for three fine wool hoggets shorn as lambs the competition was not so close. Entries in the other classes of the flock sec‘ion were comparatively small, i There were good entries in the Southdown section, and the exhibits were of a high quality, said the judge (Mr H. H. Petrie, of Swannanoa). The championship was won by a natural conditioned ewe owned and bred by T. E. M. Brooks. This was a fine specimen. The sheep were well brought out for a show so early in the season. Fat Lamb Section The quality was particularly good in the fat lamb section, even though entries were smaller than last year, said the judge (Mr Ellis Moon, of Ashburton). The standard of the lambs in the ex-j port classes was very good for! the time of the year, and they! were capable of gaining placings | in any metropolitan show. Entries in the Suffolk and South : Suffolk sections were of a high| quality, said the judge (Mr I. Thomson, of Culverden). Mrs J. i M. Jarman’s champion Suffolk ram was an upstanding, bold animal, and the ewe hoggets exhibited by Mrs Jarman were also of an exceptional standard. The number entered in the South Suffolk section was about the same as last year and they were of a good standard. G. N. Neave’s champion ram was an outstanding sheep.' and his champion ewe was an excellent example. There was a lack of competition in the classes for Milking Shorthorns because of the small number of entries, but the standard in some cases was good, said the judge (Mr J. E. Pemberton, of Geraldine).

He was greatly impressed by the quality of the Ayrshires exhibited. said the judge (Mr L. H. Muirhead. of Invercargill). The number of entries was good, and they showed marked evidence that the breed was improving. The cow’s were well brought out with good udders. J. Legg's champion cow was outstanding. The Friesians were not as far advanced in condition as in previous years, said the judge (Mr M. V. Dickie, of Gore). Entries were a little disappointing. The champion cow exhibited by E. J. Stalker and the champion bull exhibited by C. W. Humm and Sons could hold their own at any show. The award for the champion dairy cow went to H. J Hurford's Clover Nook Ellen, a Jersey, for the second year in succession. Results:— SHEEP Border Leicester (Judge: Mr S. Dowthwaite, Christchurch) Ram, under 18 months (2): H. M.
