CLIMBING IN ANTARCTICA
Club To Go Ahead With Plans The New Zealand Alpine Club has decided to go ahead with plans for a climbing expedition to Antarctica in the summer of 1958-59 The decision was made in ChristIchurch during the week-end bv I the club's general committee after lit had discussed a report from I the sub-committee appointed to-, investigate proposals for an expedition. The president of the club (Mr 3. Syme, of Hawera) said on Saturday that the sending of an expedition depended on the Government’s approval and the availability of transport to and from the Antarctic. An approach had been made to the Government for approval of the expedition, and this was expected in due course Khen other Government commitments in Antarctica had been clarified. Mr Syme said that 'after discussing the sub-committee’s report, which was presented by the interim organiser (Mr P. Gardner, of Levin), the committee lagreed that the best destination Ifor an expedition should be Scott 'Base, in McMurdo Sound There here still other details such as ’cost and membership of the expedition to be examined. Members of the club would now be advised more fully about the proposed expedition and invited to say whether they were interested in assisting its organisation. Applications have been invited from members of the club for inclusion m the climbing party.
