Footwear Workers’ Award
Footwear manufacturing workers in the Northern, Taranaki. Wellington, Marlborough, Westland and Canterbury industrial districts will receive higher wages as a result of a new award settled in Conciliation Council.
The award will take effect from August 22.
Adult male workers who have served an apprenticeship or have had at least one year’s experience in certain trades will receive 5s 3d an hour, an increase of ijd. Those who have not served an apprenticeship or had one year’s experience in the trades will have their wages increased by |d to 5s oi}d an hour. Other adult male workers will receive id an hour increase, bringing them to 4s B|d the first year, 4s 9?d the second year, and 4s 10? d for each subsequent year. Adult females working in the boot and shoe industry will now receive a minimum of £6 14s 2d a week, an increase of 2s 2d. Where employment is terminated without 24 hours notice one day's wages will be paid or forfeited as the case may be. This shall not prevent the summary dismissal of an employee for misconduct, however.
A new provision is that no more than 4J hours shall be worked without a break of at least half an hour for a meal.
