(N.Z. Press Association —Copyright) (Rec. 11 p.m.) SINGAPORE. October 20.
New Zealand would maintain Colombo Plan technical aid at a high level, Mr Foss Shanahan, the New Zealand Commissioner for South-east Asia, said today before leaving for Saigon to attend a Ministerial meeting of the Colombo Plan consultative committee.
He said Nev.’ Zealand educational facilities were at present heavily used by the country’s rapidly-growing population, the big intake of Colombo Plan and private Asian students and the need to train young people from the Pacific islands, for which New Zealand had a special responsibility. Colombo Plan awards would be kept at a high level in 1958 and in future years and students from various territories would continue to benefit. Up to the end of June, 1957. New Zealand had allocated £5.200,000 to Asian Colombo Plan members in capital aid. At the same time, 460 Asian students had received Colombo Plan awards to train in New Zealand, which in turn had sent 72 experts to various Asian countries.
