Women’s Hockey Canterbury’s Improved Form At Ashburton

Canterbury scored a win and a draw in yesterday’s games of the New Zealand women’s hockey tournament which is being held at Ashburton. The Canterbury A team beat Hawke’s Bay, 3-1, and the B side drew with Rangitikei, one goal each. Both teams showed improved form in these games

By beating Wellington, the Aui kland Town side gained the lead in the major A section and Maniototo is now leading the major B section. The games were played in overcast weather on grounds which were damp for the morning matches but which dried out later in the day. Canterbury A’s Win

Canterbury deserved its win against Hawke’s Bay, and its forwards were much more aggressive than in their game against Otago on Saturday. The Canterbury side maintained a territorial advantage throughout the match, and the forwards frequently centred play around the Hawke’s Bay goal mouth. Their combination and positional play was good, and they placed their passes and trapped the ball better than they did in earlier games. Hawke’s Bay made several attempts to score, but the Canterbury defence was sound. For Canterbury H. Turner, the right inner, C. Cole, at left inner, and J. Davidson, on the left wing, scored goals. Canterbury B v. Rangitikei

Rangitikei had its third draw against Canterbury B—each team scoring one goal. Both sides tried hard in the second half to score the deciding goal and play ranged up and down the field.

Canterbury played an improved game and settled down after the start. The team was quicker to the ball than in earlier games, and the positional play was improved. The match was very evenly contested, and both teams had their share of attacking. B. Turner scored Canterbury’s goal, and for Rangitikei the right inner, J. Still, scored. Other Major Games

Auckland Town scored a goal early in its game with Wellington, and although Wellington tried desperately to score, it was unable to do so. J. Thompson, at centre half, and E. Field, at left wing, were outstanding for Auckland, and the two Wellington full-backs, J. McLean and B. Hendle, made few mistakes. There were instances of obstruction and players occasionally lifted the ball when they hit in the game.

Neither side settled down properly until the second half of the game between Maniototo and Auckland Country, two of the leading teams in the B section. Maniototo played with superior combination and ball control, especially in the second spell, and finished with a 4-0 win. For Maniototo, P. Forrester (2), C. Evans, and A. McSkimming scored goals. \

N. Gilmour had a field day in the game between Malvern and Wairarapa to score six of her side’s nine goals. Other Malvern scorers were P. Saunders (2) and C. Johnstone (1). For Wairarapa, A. Rewi, J. Douglas, and R. Mclnlay scored. Malvern won 9-3.

Eastern Southland had a good win over Taranaki, which was sharing the lead in the B division of the major section. Eastern Southland won 4-0. Minor Section Ashburton took the lead in tfie minor A section yesterday and is so far unbeaten in the tournament. In the game against North Otago, Ashburton won by 4 goals to 2. During the first half, the Ashburton players tended to stand off and not tackle their opponents properly. Ashburton passed better than North Otago, however, and concentrated on its short passing game. On the other hand. North Otago played a hardhitting style of game. The scorers for Ashburton were M. Mackay (3) and A. Behrnes (1), and for North Otago R Wilson and I. Jenney scored goafs. Central Otago caused a minor upset by beating Wanganui 2-1 in a fast and very even game. Central Otago was a fast and lively team, and although Wanganui held a territorial advantage, the Wanganui forwards failed to capitalise on scoring opportunities. Until she had to leave the field with an injury. M. Wallace played brilliantly for Wanganui. Central Otago’s goals were scored by S. Weller. The aggressive Bush side held the lead in the minor. B section by beating Buller 6-1. Bush was too good for .Buller and played good constructive hockey. E. Walker scored four goals for Bush, and H. Sorenson and M. Monro scoren one each. For Btiller N. Jenkins scored one goal. • . , Other good wins were gamed by Ruahine, which beat Horowhenua 5-0, and by Southland, which beat South Canterbury by 4 goals to 0.
