LEAGUE IN AUSTRALIA
The grand scale on which Rugby League is organised in Australia made a great impression upon a former Addington League player, Mr J. Clarke, who returned from Australia recently. Not only were the headquarters of the Australian clubs palatial buildings, but the facilities were almost beyond the imagination of New Zealanders, said Mr Clarke. When Mr Clarke visited the building owned by the Western Suburbs Club in Sydney he found a grill could be had at almost any time during the day and evening. During the evenings, a fivepiece or six-piece orchestra accompanied dancing.
Besides a bar, the club derived revenue from the operation of poker machines, said Mr Clarke. Sixteen full-time employees were in charge of the operation of the club and a £lO,OOO extension was being made to the building. A bonus of £350 had been paid to Western Suburbs players during last year, and it was expected that about £5OO would be paid this year, said Mr Clarke. ' During big fixtures at the Sydney Cricket Ground, loudspeakers gave out information on results from other sports. Racing, soccer and Rugby Union, as well as women’s basketball, said Mr Clarke, were broadcast over the public address system to keep the public abreast with results.
