TYRE FACTORY DISMISSALS
Disputes Committee To Meet
The basis of incentive payments on certain work at the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company’s plant in Papanui will be discussed on Monday at. a meeting of the disputes committee. The refusal of the tyre-builders to accept a new incentive bonus scheme, introduced with a change in the manufacture of some lines at the plant, has caused some slowing down of production. Because of this slowing down, about 50 workers, none actually tyre-builders, have been dismissed by the management.
The management still refused yesterday to comment on the dismissals. but it is understood that notice was given the men when it was found that there was not enough work in their departments.
Under a clause written into the rubber workers’ award. any changes in the basis of payment for incentive bonuses must be agreed upon by both the union and the management. Almost every -change in manufacturing processes -and these are not infrequent—requires modification of the bonus scheme and discussions between the parties.
Mr A. B. Grant, secretary nt the Canterbury Rubber Workers’ Union, was not available last evening Fqt comment.
