“SPECTACULAR SUCCESS”
View Of Army Secretary MIAMI (Florida), Aug. 29. The Secretary of the Army (Mr Wilber Brucker) said today that the Army’s Jupiter missile was “a spectacular success.’’ He expressed doubt at a press conference that the Soviet Union actually has an intercontinental ballistic missile which could he put to immediate use. Mr Brucker declined commen' on how soon the States expected to. complete an oceanspanning missile. He would say only that the Jupiter was “slightly ahead of schedule and a spectacular success.” The Soviet announcement indicated that the missile of which the Russians boasted was a ‘‘re? search test vehicle,” Mr Brucker said. “It is a long way from that to an operational vehicle,” he said.
But the United States must not, be complacent about it. he said “The important thing is to do all we efin through our intelligence agencies to check on the Russian announcement, while going ahead calmly and swiftly with our own missile programme.”
