Reid, Stephens In Final

With the national badminton championships at Feilding nearing the end of the week’s play, the pressure was on the top players in tonight’s games. * In the men’s singles, seven of the eight seeded players reached the quarter-finals, N. R. Thompson (Southland) losing his game. In the semi-finals of the men’s grade, the reigning champion, A. L. Scott (Otago) found the young Wellington champion, A. Stephens, too strong, the latter winning 15-11. 15-10.' Cn only one occasion did Scott lead on points. In the other semi-final, R. Reid (Otago), junior champion in 1954 and 1955, beat C. Sheerin, the Manawatu champion, without much trouble. In the women’s singles, the first four seedings played true to form to reach the semi-finals. Miss S. Cox, the present champion, had an easy win over Mrs A. Butterworth, to reach the final, and tonight she will meet Miss A. Mackenzie, the No. 2 seed.
Tonight Miss Mackenzie defeated the No. 3 player, Miss N. M. Fleming, in straight sets. The doubles ehamiponships reached the semi-final stage and all the B and C grade chamionships were completed. Tomorrow night will see the finals of the major events played. Tonight considerable interest was shown in the junior championships for placers under 19. In the -final of the boys’ singles, C. J. Young (Southland), last year’s junior champion, will meet L. Bristol (Wanganui). The girls’ singles will be fought out between Miss A. Holden (Southland) and Miss M. Moorhead (Taranaki). A Grade, Women’s Singles.—Semifinals: Miss S. Cox beat Mrs A. Butterworth, 11-2, 11-2; Miss A. Mackenzie beat Miss P. M. Fleming, 11-8, 11-8.
Men’s Singles.—Semi-finals: A. Stephens beat A. L. Scott, 15-11, 1510; D. B. Reid beat C. Sheerin. 15-0, 15-10.
B Grade Men’s Singles.—Final; N. Reid beat C. P. Song, 15-6, 15-9. Men’s doubles —final: A. P. Song and D. D. Me-. Leod beat K. Elliotte und R. Thompson, 7-15. 15-8, 15-6. Mixed doubles— Semi-final: K. Elliotte and Mrs M. Blampied beat L. Quirk and Miss A. Nelli-by default.
C Grade Men’s Singles.—Final: N. Allerby beat A. Mlddleberg, 21-14. Women’s singles—Final: Miss P. Sewell bedt Mrs N. Hooper, 15-3. Mixed doubles— Final: G. Roberts and Mrs D. Ross beat I. Stevenson and Miss B. Jensen, 21-12.
Juniors Girls* Singles.—Semi-finals: Miss A. Holden beat Miss R. Shepperd by default; Miss M. Moorhead beat Miss J. Glenie, 11-7, 11-1. Boys’ singles— Semi-finals: C. J. Young beat K. Elliotte, 15-10, 15-0; L. Bristol beat R. Purser, 15-8, 15rl0. Girls’ doubles—-semi-finals: Miss M. Moorhead and Miks A. Holden beat Miss L. Sarah and Miss P. Sewell, 15-12, 15-5.
