DEFAMATION OF JUDGES
Newspaper Owner Sent To Prison
(N.Z. Press Associatlon~.Copyright) SALE (Cheshire), Aug. 27.
A newspaper proprietor accused of “scandalising the Government by writing abusive and defamatory statements about Her Majesty’s Judges,” was sentenced to six months’ gaol today under a 1361 Justice of the Peace Act. One Judge, it was said, was described as “mad as a hatter” and another as a “hoodlum Fascist.” Leslie Carme, owner of the “Sale Pioneer,” appeared on warrant after failing to answer a summons for being the writer and publisher of abusive and defamatory statements and a person likely to persevere in such conduct and behaviour.
Carme refused to recognise the jurisdiction of the Court' and police compelled him to sit and listen to the case.
Asked if he were prepared to enter a recognisance of £5OO to keep the peace, with two sureties of £lOO each. Carme replied: “You have no jurisdiction. Now do what you can if you dare.”
