COPPER PLANT EXPLOSIONS
Base Of Furnace Collapses (N.Z. Preu AMociation—Copyright) SYDNEY, August 27. Hundreds of workers early today began clearing up operations after yesterday’s series of explosions, which caused £250,000 worth of damage to Australia's major copper refining plant at Port Kembla, on the south coast of New South Wales. The explosions 'occurred at the electrolytic refining and smelting works, when the base of a'furnace collapsed, sending molten copper cascading into nearby coolers. Prompt action by an observant worker saved his mates from death or serious injury in the blast. He noticed a crack in the furnace and the men were warned to leave the plant quickly. The explosion occurred in the smelting room, not far from the scene of a violent explosion in U 33.
