Soccer TROPHY TEAM Selector To Try New Inside Forwards

“It was quite a good game up till 11 minutes after the start,” said Mr Roger Smith, selector of the Canterbury representative soccer team, reporting to the Canterbury Football Association last evening on the Football Association trophy game against Waikato last Saturday. “We won the match and still have the trophy and should be happy, but I, myself, am not particularly happy. Our trouble is with the inside forwards and for the games against Otago and Wellington I propose to look for them outside the 18 players in the training squad, but I would like it to be understood that I am doing this because I want to hold the trophy. The next trophygame is more important than the games against Otago and Wellington. If I don’t select players who have been in the team this season, I would like them to understand that I have not forgotten them.” “I think the selector is to be commended on having the courage to look outside the original 18 of the training squad,” commented Mr F. Verlander.

Next Challenger The New Zealand Football Association has ruled that Bay of Plenty is next on the list of challengers for the Football Association trophy. No advice that the challenge was not going to be sustained had been received. Auckland was next after Bay of Plenty, followed by Otago and South Canterbury. The next free date for a trophy game is September 21, and the Canterbury association hopes that either Bay of Plenty or Auckland will come south on that date. The Auckland association has stated that it will not make any arrangements until after September 7, when it will have a better idea of club fixtures. It was felt at last night’s, meeting that the delay in arriving at a decision might mean that it would be too late to arrange a match with Otago, should Auckland not wish to play, and efforts will be made to secure an earlier decision. Additional Game For Hurley Shield A suggestion that because of last Saturday’s drawn game betwen Technical Old Boys and Western, the next meeting of the two clubs be for the Hurley Shield and English Cup met with opposition at last evening’s meeting of the Canterbury Football Association, and it was decided to apply to the City Council for permission to play the Hurley Shield game on October 5. Originally, it was planned to complete all competitions in September. When the suggestion that the match count for both competitions was put forward, Mr T. Hastings objected. He considered that if such an arrangement were made, the clubs should claim their players from the Canterbury side. “You can’t do that,” said the president, Mr M. Gordon. Mr J. Smith said that the Western Club had heard that a “doubleheader” was possible, and it did not like the idea either. It was understood that there was not a free Saturday before the end of September, but he suggested that the Hurley Shield game, which could quite easily be the deciding match in the competition, be played on the first Saturday in October.

After further discussion it was decided to ask permission of the City Council to play the match on October 5.
