ONE-ACT PLAY CONTEST

85 Entries For Drama League Competition (New Zealana Press Association) WELLINGTON, August 18.

The 1957 one-act competition for playwrights being conducted by the British Drama League in its jubilee year has drawn 85 entries. The competition is subdivided as follows: Junior section (five entries), judge, Mrs A. D. Priestley, Wellington. Plays for all-women cast (17 entries), Miss O. E. Harding, Wellington. Religious (12 entries), Mrs M. Sullivan, Christchurch. Plays for presentation by schoolchildren (10 entries), Mr D. G. Edwards, Wellington. Open (41 entries), Mr F. Newman, Christchurch. The competition for full-length plays will not close until August 31, and this section is to be judged by a London theatre critic, Mr J. C. Trewin. Auckland Production A prduction of Tennessee Williams’s “The Purification,” by the Bailey Academy players, an Auckland dramatic group—will be one of the four plays to com? pete at the league’s festival at Hawera next month. This was announced by the ack judicator of the elimination tests, Mr Frank Newman, last night. The selection was made from 11 plays. Three were by New Zealand authors and these will still have a chance to compete for the best New Zealand play title.
