Evatt On Cause Of War
MELBOURNE, August 12. The Australian Labour Party leader, Dr. H. V. Evatt, told a meeting last night that the greatest obstacle to peace was “enormous profits” made out of the munitions of war, such as oil. Dr. Evatt, who visited the Middle East on his recent overseas tour, was addressing a meeting organised by the Jewish Council to Combat Fascism and Anti-Semitism. Dr. Evatt said Israel was the only outpost of democracy in the Middle East. I “It is amazing the sanctity given to countries possessing oil,” Dr. Evatt said. Calling for disarmament and the prohibition of atomic weapons, Dr. Evatt said: “If you could finalise those things, all the rest of the disputes of the world could be settled because they don’t amount to much.”
