REGIMENTAL MERGER
Appeal To Prime Minister
(NJZ Press Association—Copyright} LONDON, August 3. Conservative and Labour members of Parliament have pleaded with the Prime Minister to cancel the proposed marriage of two famous Scottish regiments—one that wears the kilt and the other that wears trews. The regiments, the Royal Scots Fusiliers and the Highland Light Infantry, are among those to be merged iri parts under the British Government’s new plan for the Army. A deputation of members from Scottish constituencies saw the Prime Minister, Mr Macmillon, in his room at the House of Commons. With him, were the Defence Minister, Mr Duncan Sandys, the War Minister, Mr John Hare, and Field Marshal Sir Gerald Templer, Chief of the Imperial General Staff.
The deputation pleaded that the merging of regiments would be a misalliance. The Prime Minister promised that their views would be most carefully considered.
