QUEENSLAND’S NEW PREMIER

Queensland’s new Premier, Mr George Francis Reuben Nicklin, leader of the Country Party, is respected by his colleagues and political opponents alike as a man of fairness and scrupulous honesty. He is 61. His fairness to his opponents has occasionally led tn rumours of moves to replace him* with a more forceful leader, but his Parliamentary colleagues have remained steadfastly loyal to him.
Mr Nicklin won the Military Medal and a commission in World War I, and bn his discharge bought a 20-acre pineapple farm in the sub-tropical fruit belt 60 miles north of Brisbane. The returned soldier’s struggle on the land during the depression years led him to politics, and he won a blue -. ribbon Country Party seat in 1932 Mr Nicklin became Country Party leader in Queensland m 1941. He sold his farm in. 195 U to devote all his time to politics. He is a teetotaller and nonsmoker. His favourite pastime is judging tropical fruit at shows along the Queensland coast, and in *his he is one of the State's top experts.
