Britain To Supply Equipment
( N Z Press Association—Copyright» (Rec. 10 p.m.) ROME, August 2. British and American technicians and finance from the World Bank will launch Italy on an ambitious nuclear power programme, with the construction of at least three atomic power stations in the next few years. The British Atomic Energy Authority will provide the necessary “know-how” for building a British type reactor in Northern Italy. .The agreement is the first between the British agency and a foreign country. British companies will supply all the machinery and equipment that cannot be made in Italy. The American. Vitro Corporation will furnish the same technical assistance for the construction of an American-type plant in Central or Southern Italy. A third power station will be built in Southern Italy with funds at least partly supplied by the World Bank. Details of the type of the reactor and who will build it are still to be settled.
Italy is expected to spend between £2O and £3O million in Britain acquiring machinery for the power station for Northern Italy.
