Minister Hints At Delay

The Government was aware of growing pressure in Christchurch for the provision at Harewood airport of modern aircraft-con-trolled approach equipment, said the Minister in charge of Civil Aviation (Mr T. P. Shand), yesterday. He was commenting on the Government decision to contribute up to £155,000 toward the cost of the new terminal building at the airport. While no definite estimate of the delay could be given, the whole programme would undoubtedly be put back to some extent by the decision to build an expensive terminal building, he said. “Moreover, we are not able to consider Christchurch in isolation,” Mr Shand added. “The policy of developing terminal facilities upon the scale proposed in Christchurch, if adopted on a nation-wide scale, would inevitably result in . very serious delays in work which is fundamentally much more essential than the achievement of the ideal in passenger terminal facilities.*'
