HOW FAVOURITES HAVE FARED
Grand Nationals For Twenty Years
Favourites have fared reasonably well in the Grand National Steeplechase, which will be run for the eighty-third time today. Six were successful in the last 20 contests, and a similar number earned prize-money from minor placings Of the eight which were unplaced, three fell, one lost his rider, and one broke down. The following is a survey of their performances:— 1956: Hit Parade; unplaced. 1955: Every Time; second. 1954: Young Prince; won. 1953: Dun wold; unplaced.* 1952: Count Minerva; fourth. 1951: Jon Rosa; fourth. 1950: Kauri Pine; lost rider. 1949: Master Meruit; second. 1948: Brookby Song; won. 1947: Pages Raid; fell. 1946: As Required; fell. 1945: Kanui te Pai; fell. 1944: Noko; fourth. 1943: Anglo French; won. 1942: Foxiana; won. 1941: Slayer; third. 1940: Padishah; broke down. 1939: Padishah; won. 1938: Clarion Call; won. 1937: Royal Limond; upnlaced.
