CABS FOR SALE YOU WILL PAY LESS YOU WILL PAY LESS YOU WILL GAIN MORE YOU WILL GAIN MORE alan McGillivray alan McGillivray alan McGillivray STATES Economy, utility, versatility and reliability are factors any new car must offer if any degree of success is to be ensured. Transport of any kind, be it by road, sea or air, has become as much a part of our lives today as clothing, eating or housing; consequently any new form of transport, offering either the individual or the family a service, is of vital interest to all people. When this service can be had for a much smaller capital outlay, and at the same time provides economy of operation and maintenance at nearly half the cost to that which we have become accustomed, need it be stated that this type of transport will meet with overwhelming success. Most people will agree, that cars have become excessive in price whether they be new or second hand. The last models produced in 1940 ranged from £215 to £425. These prices would buy the Austin 7 and Ford 8 and all the other popular makes of English and American cars such as Morris, Ford V 8 and Chevrolet. These same makes and models today, range from £6OO to £1785, and although salaries and wages have increased tremendously over the same period, there are still many thousands of people who cannot afford to buy a new car of any kind. “Necessity is the mother of invention,” and this being a proven fact, it is only natural to find that some new form of lower cost transport is being evolved to meet the need of the people. The motive power of these new low cost vehicles is what has become known as the TWO STROKE ENGINE. TWO STROKE ENGINE. While this type of engine is not really new, as it has been in use for forty years or more, it is only now when costs have become so heavy to maintain and manufacture the orthodox cars, that the two stroke power unit has been adapted to the driving of low-powered cars. Motor cycles have used this engine for. many years, and more recently they have been utilised in the present-day power cycles. The latter vehicles are becoming more evident each day, as more and more people are realising the great economy the power cycle offers together with an amazing reliability and lack of maintenance costs. The simplicity of these power cycles is a boon to women and girls, and is the reason for so many of them being bought by them, while the ease of operation and exceptional lightness of the power cycle make it the ideal transport for daily use to and from daily occupation. As stated above, the “TWO STROKE” engine is extremely economical, simple to understand, unbelievably easy to maintain, fantastically economical on fuel, and has less moving, and wearing parts than a lawnmower. How then does this power unit function? If it has such few moving parts, what makes it so efficient? These questions will be discussed in this column on August 17.
