WOMAN MEETS CREDITORS

Debts Of £193 The cause of her bankruptcy had been that her husband, Arthur Gemmell, had worked only 18 months of the last four years, said Zoe Irene Winifred Gemmell at a meeting of her creditors before the Official Assignee (Mr G. W. Brown) yesterday. Debts amounting to £193 8s 3d were admitted, to nine creditors. Mrs Gemmell was adjudged bankrupt on July 19. The debts had been mainly incurred from February to April, 1955, said Mrs Gemmell, when her husband had been working for the Port Commission, and earning about £25 a week. Four of her seven children had been sent to private schools at this time, and many of the accounts were for school uniforms and clothing. Her husband was at present serving three years’ imprisonment. She was at present working as a housemaid at the Fox Glacier Hotel, earning between £6 and £7 a week, said Mrs Gemmell. “You are virtually a single woman as far as obligations go,” said Mr Brown/ “I could possibly resume my obligations again, and intend to at some time,” said Mrs Gemmell. Mr Brown said that if she had rto commitments towards her family, she should be able to pay something to her creditors, and then declared the meeting closed.
