ROMAN CATHOLIC YOUTH
Series Of Six Talks “Be prudent, say your prayers, keep your eyes open, be humble and use your brains” was the advice given to about 40 members of the Catholic Youth Movement by Mr E. T. Layburn last evening. Mr Layburn was the first speaker in a series of six talks on the “Man of Today.” He spoke on the realities of life. Moral courage was needed for a good life, said Mr Layburn, and necessitated strict and unswerving adherence to principles.* He cited several examples of moral courage and asked: “What would you do?”Roman Catholics should mix more with those of other religions, he said, and urged the young men present to take active parts in art and music societies. More Catholics shduld enter professional careers, such as architecture and structural engineering, he said. The second speaker last evening, Mr W. F. Brown, spoke on saving, and the need for saving. The.main reasons for saving were to marry, set up a home and raise a family, he said. After showing the average minimum costs of housing today, Mr Brown , said it was apparent that any young man should start saving from the time he began work. Sacrifices might be required, and many luxuries must be foregone, but saving was essential if an early marriage was planned. “Something . that should be avoided at all costs js the young married couples living with their families,” he said. “You must be independent, to be happy.” Various methods of saving, and the advantages of each, were described by Mr Brown. He emphasised the importance of receiving expert advice before undertaking any contracts. The speakers next Tuesday will be the Rev. Father K. O’Donpghue, and Mr G. Speed, of tfle New Zealand Broadcasting Service.
