BLUFF HARBOUR DEVELOPMENT
Expansion Of Oil Installations “The Press’- Special Service BLUFF, July 30. Hand in hand, with the expansion of Bluff, and its harbour development, has gone the expansion of the petroleum business. Bluff already has four ocean oil terminals for bulk storage at 'the port, and another oil company is waiting for a site on the reclaimed foreshore to install a fifth terminal. The mushroom growth of the oil storage area is now likely to be built up still further by the increase in storage by another company, .which has .found that its present site is nearly fully, developed Officials of the company visited Bluff last week-end and said they are hopeful of leasing an additional area on which they will install more tanks with lorryfilling facilities. Since 1926 supplies have been maintained, first by the tanker Paua, and since 1950 by the tanker Tanea.
Now the increasing petroleum requirements of Southland call for the use of overseas tankers. The capacity of a modern overseas tanker of a likely to
deliver supplies to Bluff is 18,000 tons, compared with Tanea’s 3000 tons. The immediate requirements of this company’s additional tanks are not yet decided, but for a port such as Bluff serviced by overseas tankers they say they must plan for ultimate storage capacity of the order of 30.000 tons. Theii present storage ’ capacity is 1.500,000 gallons, or. about 5500 tana.
