Effect Of Canadian Decision (Rec. 11 p.m.) OTTAWA, July ». Immigration restrictions . announced on Friday by the new Progressive Conservative Government did not apply to citizens of the United Kingdom, other Commonwealth countries. France and the United States, the Canadian Press reported today. It said the announcement affected only immigrants from other countries coming to Canada for open placement—that .was with no prearranged contract hi most occupations. It did not affect close relatives of immigrants already in Canada. • _ The affected immigrants had been issued visas valid only tor arrival in Canada before July 31, 1957. but exceptions could be made for Immigrants in occupations where there was a shortage. The move was designed to slow down the flow of immigrants in anticipation of a tight labour market in the coming winter months. The slow-down usually was put into effect annually whenever the employment "situation warranted. Similar .action was taken in September, 1958. by the former Liberal Government.
