PROGRESS OF CORPS

Report To League

The strength of the Sea Cadet Corps was eight officers, two cadet chief petty officers, and 130 cadets —lOO cadets at headquarters and 30 at the Sumner subdivision. There were vacancies for two officers and two chief petty officers, said the report of the corps presented to the annual meeting of the Canterbury branch of the Navy League last evening.

The report was signed by the commanding officer (LieutenantCommander F. J. Glanville) and the chairman of the Sea Cadet Committee (Lieutenant M. L. Newman).

“During the year a new syllabus of training has been drawn up and brought into operation,” the report said. Leading Cadet M. Pate has been accepted as a CadetMidshipman by the R.N.Z.N. and is at present under training at the Flinders naval training establishment in Melbourne. “During the year, nine cadets have been accepted by the R.N.Z.N. for continuous service; of these three are serving as artificer apprentices. Seven cadets who have elected to perform their national service training in the Navy have been accepted by H.M.N.Z.S. Pegasus.

“Much activity has taken place at the Sumner subdivision’s headquarters, and the building is now looking ship shape. The wardroom arid commanding officer s cabin are finished and the ship’s office is awaiting completion 'of electrical work. Other work completed is the senior rates’ mess and the canteen. Our thanks are given to Mr and Mrs F. Laws for their donation of materials for the construction of the galley flat. “The subdivision will soon be fully staffed and this will take a great deal of work off the shoulders of the officer in charge, said the report. -
