AMATEUR 25-MILE TITLES

Timaru Rider’s Win On a block course at Pareora th< Canterbury amateur senior ant junior 25-mile championships wen held on Saturday in perfect condi tions with no wind.

A very exciting finish was seen in the senior event when *three riders flashed across the line together. So close were these three that they each recorded 60min 15sec, with N. Cowles, the fourth rider, only O.lsec away. - , In the senior event 32 riders started on a jbutney over rolling country. Two prominent Christchurch riders, P. Wylie and G. Hill, were forced to withdraw from the race because of punctures. . Nearing the finish for the final sprint there was a bunch of 20 riders. Twenty yards from the une D. Cowles (Papanui) led out, but was passed by N. Fisher (Timaru), A. Mahon (Papanui), and R. Fowler (Avon), who filled the first three places inxthat order. In the junior event, in which there were 13 starters, D. Craig (Temuka), who finished in second place in the Canterbury 50-mile championship last year, was unfortunate to have a puncture after three miles. .There was ohly one other rider, who did not complete the course. As in the senior event there was a very tight finish, with only fractions of a second separating the first three place-getters, when T. Kenhy (Avon) held on to win from R. Harrison (Timaru). with T. Weir (Christchurch) in third place. Considering the type of course over which these events were decided, , both the senior and junior times were quite good. ' Run in conjunction with the championships were sealed handicap events. The senior was won by T. Way and the junior by B. Lyes. Abbreviations used in the results are:—Timaru (T.), Papanui (P.).
