Mare Wins Grand National

Pedro’s Pride, the only mare in the field of nine, turned in the best performance of her career today when she carried list 12]b to a clear Cut win in the £3500 Grand 'National Steeplechase at Flemington. The race was over three miles and a furlong. Pedro’s Pride, ridden by Len Moore, was forced to lead from the seven furlongs, and she stayed in front until the post. She blundered on the last of the 25 jumps, almost throwing Moore from the saddle. He lost his reins and the irons, but managed to stay on the big mare and get back into his seat. She then ran right away from the opposition to win easily by 10 lengths from Blacksmith, with Akan River another 12 lengths away third. Pedro’s Pride was the first mare to win the race—Australia’s premier jumping event—since 1'935. Results: — GRAND NATIONAL STEEPLECHASE, Of £3500. Three miles and one furlong.
