Downing Street Repairs

The Prime Minister (Mr Macmillan) has set up an independent committee to recommend action/on saving 10, 11, and 12 Downing Street. ' The state of these official houses of the Prime Minister, Chancellor of the Exchequer, and the, headquarters of the Government Whips respectively, was disclosed in the House of Lords this afternoon by Lord Mancroft, Minister without Portfolio. Lord Mancroft said that a ‘survey in 1954 showed that there had been irregular settlement owing to poor sub-soil and decay of the timber supports of the foundations. “There have at times also been dry rot and beetles in the floors and roofs,” he said. »
The. Earl of Crawford and Balcarres will be chairman of the committee, whidh will recommend what action should be taken to “preserve these historic buildings and to make them suitable for their present purposes.” j
