Police Auction In Christchurch
. The 43 bicycles that were sold m the police bicycle auction on Friday brought much better prices than expected, according to one °t , auctioneers of a Christchurch firm on whose premises the auction was h.eltf. He said that the money had not yet been counted, but he estimated that more than £2OO had been taken for the sale of bicycles and other articles.
Similar auctions are held by the police .annually. Sometimes two a year are held according to the number of bicycles and articles unclaimed.
At the last auction £77 4s Id was taken. The best' price obr tained for a bicycle was £8 Although rusty and at least 10 years old, it was still in going order. Most of the bicycles sold were in going order once the tyres had been pumped. “If any bicycle pumps had been offered for auction they would probably have brought a big price as they were in great demand,” said an auctioneer. Bicycle Wheel A bicycle wheel with about 10 spokes missing was sold for 6s. There were four bidders. A pair of spectacles sold for £2 ss. The bidding opened at 3s and there were about 20 bidders. An engagement .ring with five diamonds was sold for £l9. The bidding for this was slow. Bidding opened at £5 and rose by £1 bids. After a few brisk bids a bottle of whisky sold for £1 7s. -Other articles sold included handbags, wristlet watches, clothing, tools, car tyres, blankets and shoes. About 300 persons attended.
