POOR TEETH OF VOLUNTEERS

Their poor teeth—or lack of teeth —have caused the rejection, on present figures, of 12 per cent, of the South Islanders who have volunteered for service in Malaya with the Ist Battalion, New Zealand Regiment. Of 170 men who have been medically boarded 21 have been rejected on dental grounds, and 12 because of their general physical condition. More than that number is expected to be refused on the ground of poor suitability. About 320 men have volunteered in the South Island, and more than 1000 throughout New Zealand. The battalion's strength is to be 740. The first South Island intake will march into Burnham military camp on July 18.
